About Scuba Junkie SEAS – A Leading Marine Conservation NGO Malaysia

Scuba Junkie SEAS is the registered non-profit arm of Scuba Junkie, committed to safeguarding marine life around Mabul Island, Malaysia. As a prominent marine conservation NGO in Malaysia, we combine science, education, and grassroots action to create lasting change in ocean health.

1. Turtle Conservation

• Turtle Hatchery: Since 2011, over 24,000 hatchlings have been released. Our hatchery monitors sex ratios, hatching success rates, and unhatched egg development to better understand population trends.
• Turtle Rehabilitation Centre: The only one on Sabah’s east coast, treating injured and sick turtles to full recovery.
• Turtle Population Study: Ongoing long-term monitoring of nesting activity and turtle health.

2. Coral Conservation

• Coral Nursery & Outplanting: We grow coral fragments and transplant them to degraded reef sites, followed by routine monitoring.
• Artificial Reef Development: We're designing new reef habitats to support marine biodiversity.

3. Marine Debris Initiatives

• Reef and Beach Cleanups: Regularly conducted with volunteers and staff to keep our reefs clean and safe. The beach cleanups are every Saturday at 4pm at Mabul's Resort beach, if you're visiting come and help!
• Plastic Upcycling Project: The first of its kind on Mabul Island, turning plastic waste into souvenirs to fund our programs.

4. Community Outreach

• WWF and Mabul Eco Youth Collaboration: We work with undocumented local youth and established NGOs to promote community-driven conservation.
• School Outreach (in progress): Educational programs are in development to inspire the next generation of ocean advocates.

5. Scientific Research & Data Collection

We collect essential data from Sipadan and Si Amil islands, focusing on sharks, rays, and reef health. This contributes to global marine biodiversity records and informs our conservation strategies.

6. Working With the Best

Our projects involve collaboration with trusted global organisations like WWF Malaysia and the Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) in Sangalaki.
