Si Amil Dive Sites

FIRST BEACH

Usually our last dive of the day (they say save the best until last right?!), and a truly muck diving macro heaven! We make no bones about it, the dive site itself is not the prettiest in terms of coral life, it’s a sandy slope, with a mixture of rubble and seaweed, and a fair few unintentional artificial "structures". However, due to this silty, sheltered slope, the creatures that can be seen here are incredible- the ideal location to potentially tick off some of those bucket-list critters! Unique octopuses such as the Mimic and Wonderpus are seen regularly, as well as blue-ringed and starry nights. On the pipefish front, we often encounter Ornate Ghost Pipefish, Robust Ghost Pipefish & the elusive Velvet Ghost Pipefish. If that wasn't enough to excite you, then don't forget, sightings of Ambon scorpion fish, Flamboyant cuttlefish, Picturesque dragonets, Flying Gurnards, Hairy Frog fish, seahorses (both Pygmy and Thorny) and even the incredibly beautiful Gurnard Lionfish are all there to be found by your eagle eyed guides. This is truly a dive site not to be missed!

SECOND BEACH

Usually our first dive site of the day, and an incredible introduction to Si Amil island! A gradual sloping reef of stunning corals down to around 20 metres which then plateaus off with a mixture of sandy patches and huge coral bommies. A wonderfully colourful dive site to enjoy a decent drift dive along, however, the number attraction of this site is actually not on the reef itself, but a little off into the blue (let the adventure begin!) - a hidden cleaning station for an impressive variety of rays! We regularly see schools of devil rays (in the hundreds!) and families of eagle rays gently gliding by. They come to be cleaned by the fish living on the rocks and coral bommies. With dives heading into the blue, there are always the chances of encountering a few unexpected marine life- in past dives we have been privileged enough to dive with mantas, and even a marlin!

After all that adrenaline fuelled adventure, you will end your dive back on the reef to spot our reef favourites- schools of snappers, damsel fish, butterfly fish, shrimps, crabs and of course nudibranchs!

THIRD BEACH

Not far from Second Beach, the opportunities for ray encounters are also pretty awesome, we have often seen the rays on their way to, and from the cleaning stations of Second Beach.

This site is also a sloping reef, with beautiful coral formations and more chances to spot some unique macro life. We often see quite a few of the smaller shark species here, like coral cat sharks and bamboo sharks, so make sure you take your time to look in every nook and cranny!

MEDITATION WALL

A fantastic combination reef dive site . Starting off with a gentle slope, this site slopes off into a gorgeous wall dive. Always a great way to remind yourself the true majesty of nature when faced with an epic wall of corals and fish!

We regularly see vibrant arrays of frog fish, lion fish, eels galore, turtles and of course stunning schools of reef fish scattered along for good measure! For those eagle-eyed divers, you can also have the chance to see electric clams during the day!

The top of the wall, where we will enjoy our safety stop is a heaven for many residents critters, including ribbon eels and octopus.

treasure chest

This is one of our favourite drift dive sites on Si Amil! The site starts as a gently sloping coral reef, with a wide variety of hard and soft corals. Depending on the strength of the current, we can drift along on to a plateaued section of the reef, with a maximum depth of 12 metres. Here we find an amazing “garden” of huge barrel sponges and jagged staghorn corals.

A gorgeous site to enjoy plenty of green turtles, batfish, banded snake eels, harlequin sweetlips, lion fish, frog fish and many many more- so what are you waiting for?!
