Why Discover Scuba Diving?

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving program lets you experience the thrill of diving under the supervision of a PADI Professional in confined water under easy conditions. During your adventure, you'll master some basic concepts and scuba skills and will even head off to experience an open water adventure.

When you participate in a Discover Scuba Diving program, you discover excitement and adventure - freedom and serenity. Nothing compares to the "weightless" exhilaration of breathing underwater. Only a diver knows the feeling!

The discover scuba diving course will only take 1 Day.

Where can I go from here?

As soon as you Discover Scuba Diving, you're on your way to an internationally recognized certification. That's because you may learn skills used in the PADI Open Water Diver course during your Discover Scuba Diving adventure. If you and your instructor elect to practice these skills, they may be credited toward the PADI Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver certifications.

Open Water

Why PADI Open Water?

As a certified PADI Open Water Diver, the most widely recognized and respected rating in the world, you have the freedom to dive with a buddy independent of a professional. If you already tried a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience or are PADI Scuba Diver certified, check with our instructors to see how credit from these courses may apply to the open water program.

What do I need to start?

Virtually anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification. You must be older than the age of 14 to begin the PADI Open Water Diver program. For those of you who are not above the age of 14 and would like to participate in the PADI Open Water Diver Program, then the PADI Junior Open Water Diver program is available to you.

What will I do?

Throughout the course, you'll learn fundamentals of scuba diving, including dive equipment and techniques. You earn this rating by completing five confined open water dives and knowledge development sessions and by making four to five open water dives

How long will it take?

PADI Open Water usually takes 3 days to complete, if you need a bit of extra time then don't worry, additional days can be arranged at RM250 per day.

E-learning

If you are short on time or would like to maximize your time in the water then it is possible to complete the PADI Open Water Diver Theory class online before you arrive and take the practical part of the course here. You will need to pay a fee to PADI which is currently US$189 and can then complete the 2 day practical part of the course here with us.
All REGISTERED E-learning students will receive a discount of RM325 on their Open Water Course.

Advanced Open Water

Adventures in Diving!

The Adventures in Diving program offers both the Adventure Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications. If you complete any three adventure dives, you can earn your PADI Adventure Diver certification. If you complete your Deep Adventure Dive, Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive and three Adventure Dives for a total of five, you can earn your Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

Why PADI Advanced Open Water?

Have you always wanted to try underwater photography? How about wreck diving? Here's your chance because you can sample three dives of your choice, get a taste of what you like, and feel more comfortable in the water, strengthening your underwater skills and letting you enjoy diving more than ever.

What do I need to start?

PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization). Minimum age: 15 years old.

What will I do?

AWARE-Fish Identification, Underwater Naturalist, Boat Diver, Underwater Navigator, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Photography, Multilevel Diver, Deep Diver, Night Diver and Drift Diver.

How long will it take?

For Adventure Diver only one day (three dives). Advanced Course is two days (five dives).

Where can I go from here?

After your PADI Adventure Diver certification you can take the next step by completing two more adventure dives. If you've completed five total adventure dives that include deep and navigation, you're a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. PADI Adventure Dives can also count towards PADI Specialty Diver certifications.

Rescue Diver

Why Rescue Diver?

Rewarding and fun - that best describes the PADI Rescue Diver course. This course will expand your knowledge and experience level: Rescue Divers learn to look beyond themselves and consider the safety and well being of other divers. Although this course is serious, it is an enjoyable way to build your confidence.

What do I need to start?

You can enroll in the Rescue Diver Course as a certified Open Water Diver (or have a qualifying certification from another training organization) and participate in the Rescue Diver knowledge development and rescue training sessions, in confined water only, while working on your Advanced Open Water Diver certification. Successful completion of a sanctioned CPR program within the past 24 months. The Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) and Secondary Care (First Aid) courses meet these requirements.

What will I do?

Rescue Diver training will prepare you to prevent problems and, if necessary, manage dive emergencies.

How long will it take?

The Rescue Course takes 3 days to complete. One day of classroom theory and two days (5 dives) of practical.

The PADI Rescue Diver certification is a prerequisite for all Professional level PADI courses, beginning with the PADI Divemaster certification.

Emergency First Response

Why emergency first response?

Emergency First Response (EFR) is the fastest-growing international CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid training organization. Dedicated to training the lay rescuer, EFR courses encompasses adult, child and infant CPR skills, provides AED and First Aid training, and feature an outstanding First Aid at Work component. Many divers take the Emergency First Response courses to meet program prerequisites, such as PADI Rescue Diver, or as preparation for becoming a PADI Divemaster. However, most have also found the EFR program to be important in every day life. They have taken a significant step in emergency preparedness, and feel confident that they can provide care should an emergency situation arise.

What do I need to start?

  • No dive certification required
  • No minimum age requirements

What will I do?

The course incorporates independent study to prepare you for a classroom and hands-on skill development session with your instructor. You will learn the same patient care techniques used by medical professionals, but at a lay person level.

How long will it take?

Depending on the amount of independent study and the class size, the Primary Care and Secondary Care courses may be completed in as little as four hours to six hours

Divemaster

Take the first step in your professional diving career by becoming a PADI Divemaster!

Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle and blessed by some of the highest marine biodiversity in the world, Scuba Junkie truly is a special place to become a Divemaster. Working closely with our multilingual and friendly Instructors, you’ll expand your dive knowledge and hone your skills as you become a dive professional. We will introduce you not only to the role of PADI Divemaster but also to the incredible diversity of marine life here and to your responsibility as a dive professional to help preserve the marine environment.

What will you do as a PADI Divemaster?

The Divemaster course starts on the 1st of each month and lasts for 4 weeks.

Weeks one to four are dedicated to the core requirements of the course. Your time will be split between theory sessions designed to give you all the background knowledge expected of a PADI Divemaster and practical in-water sessions. Practical sessions will range from assisting instructors on a variety of PADI courses from Open Water to Rescue, learning how to safely guide certified divers in a variety of dive sites and conditions, fine tuning your all important rescue skills, conducting your own dive site mapping project, practising your 20 basic skills & participating in Deep Dive and Search & Recovery Workshops. We’ll also assess your swimming skills and if there’s time of course, throw in a fun dive or 2!! During this part of the training you can expect to log around 50 dives and will spend around 5 to 6 days a week in the water.

We offer all our trainees the option of staying on for an additional 2 week Internship, giving you time to put everything you have learned into practice. Your 2 weeks will be spent shadowing our divemasters & practising guiding groups around the outstanding reefs of Mabul, Kapalai and the Sipadan Barrier Reef, problem solving, critter spotting and generally helping to make sure that the day to day running of the dive shop goes smoothly!! If you have opted to take our ECO-Divemaster program then it is also during this time that you will take your Reef Check Certification Course. You can usually expect to log a further 30 or more dives during your internship.

What is the ECO-Divemaster Course?

These days most divers expect more than just a good dive from their Divemaster, they also expect you to be caring, passionate and knowledgeable about the marine environment. During your ECO-Divemaster course you will attend lectures on Shark & Turtle Conservation and Biology as well as Reef fish & Coral ID sessions PLUS you will complete your Reef Check Certification course with our in-house Reef Check team. Our ECO-DMT’s also participate in a range of other activities depending on what events are taking place during their stay, these can include beach cleans, reef cleans, helping release baby turtles at our hatchery and community projects such as introducing local school kids to the underwater world – check out what events are currently taking place on our Facebook Page

What do I need to start?

To enroll in the PADI Divemaster you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a current medical attesting to your diving fitness signed by a physician within the previous 12 months (can be obtained here)
  • Hold a PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent certification
  • Hold a current Emergency First Response certificate obtained within the past 2 years
  • Have completed at least 40 dives

If you haven’t completed your Rescue, EFR or 40 dives then you will need to arrive in time to complete these before your Divemaster course starts (remember they start on the 1st of each month), we offer our future DMTs discounted rates on fun dives & courses, please contact us to find out more!

Where will I stay?

We have options for accommodation in both Semporna and Mabul. The majority of your Divemaster training course will take place at Mabul island so you may find it more convenient to be based there but for those on a budget, Semporna does offer some great cheap accommodation and you are only an hour’s boat ride from Mabul.

How much does it cost?

The 4 week Divemaster course costs RM3000 including your Divemaster CrewPak, we also offer some great Divemaster course + Crewpak + Accommodation packages, check out the rates below:

What do I need to bring?

Diving equipment is available for you to use free of charge during your course. If you are thinking of working as a divemaster after your course, then you may want to buy some gear during your time with us and you will get a great DMT discount on items purchased thorough our retail shop. There are certain items that you need to complete the course including Dive Computer, Compass, White Slate, Surface Marker Buoy & tank banger – if you do not already own these, you can buy them at a discounted rate on arrival at our retail shop.

Instructor Development Course (IDC)

Take the next step in your professional diving career by becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor!

At Scuba Junkie we are not only passionate about providing high quality, personalised IDC’s that fully prepare you for the Instructor Examination (IE) but also take the time to share with you our commitment to the marine environment. During your time with us you will not only cover all the core requirements of the IDC but will also get to experience some world class diving AND be introduced to our environmental projects – lucky candidates may even get to see baby turtles hatching at our turtle hatchery on Mabul island!! By keeping our IDC class sizes to a maximum of 10, we can give each student the personal attention they need to ensure they are 100% prepared for the IE.

What will I do during the IDC?

We start each IDC by making sure that you are fully up to date on your divemaster theory, rescue skills and 20 basic skills. Every IDC includes a 2 day preparation period specifically designed to pick up on and remediate any gaps in your knowledge. We can also provide longer preparation periods if required. During the IDC you will split your time between our classroom and our dedicated confined & open water training areas plus you will take the Emergency First Response Instructor Course which is required for your career as a PADI Instructor. Before declaring you ready for the IE, we conduct a full mock 2 day IE so that you know exactly what to expect from the real one!

  • Hold a current Emergency First Response certificate obtained within the past 2 years (if you need to renew your EFR we can arrange this at an additional cost of RM300)
  • Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
  • Have completed at least 60 dives (100 before attending the IE)

How long will it take?

Our IDC prep + IDC + EFR Instructor + Speciality Instructor program lasts for 14 days, you will need to allow an additional 2 days to complete your PADI IE.

Where will I stay?

With a mere 2 min walk from the classroom to the dive sites, Mabul Island provides the perfect learning environment in which to conduct IDCs. Our recommended Best IDC Package includes 13 nights full board accommodation at our beautiful Mabul Beach Resort on Mabul Island. All your meals and day to day needs will be taken care of by our helpful resort staff, leaving you free to focus on your IDC.

Instructor Development Course Internship

If you’ve recently become a divemaster or feel that you would like to spend longer than a couple of weeks with us then our IDC internship may be the right option for you.

The Internship lasts for a total of 3 months and is broken down as follows:

Month 1: Shadowing, learning the dive sites & practising guiding certified divers plus settle into life on Mabul and prepare for your IDC.

Month 2: 2 week IDC and 2 week instructor training – during this time you will shadow our experienced instructors, develop your own teaching style and prepare to teach your own courses

Month 3: Your goal for this last month is to certify your first 20 students! This will be a great asset for your CV and will allow you to apply for different Instructor specialty ratings depending on your previous experience as a diver.

The 3 month internship costs RM8950 + 6% GST inclusive of accomodation & meals as well as our 2 week Best IDC Package

To enroll in the PADI IDC you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a current medical attesting to your diving fitness signed by a physician within the previous 12 months (can be obtained here)
  • Hold a leadership level diving certification such as PADI Divemaster
  • Hold a current Emergency First Response certificate obtained within the past 2 years (if you need to renew your EFR we can arrange this at an additional cost of RM300)
